Dear
Next Saturday you have the opportunity to vote for a new MP for Christchurch East. I am backing my candidate Matthew Doocey and I hope you will too.
Matthew is clearly the best candidate, and he’s standing for a Party that’s focused on the things that matter, like jobs, growth and the rebuild.
He was born and raised in Christchurch. He is committed to raising his own family here and he wants the best for you, your family and the entire Christchurch East community.
Matthew Doocey will be a strong voice for you inside my Government as we rebuild Christchurch; a massive undertaking. I understand many households are overcoming big challenges. But after on of our largest natural disasters and more than 11,000 after-shocks, we’re on the right track. We have made the rebuild a priority, investing:

  • $15 billion into the rebuild
  • $600 million into new hospital facilities
  • $1 billion into school renewal
  • $3.8 billion into major projects to boost confidence and create jobs
  • $260 million into Canterbury University.

We are working hard for you and getting results, including:

  • Economic growth across the region of 6.6%
  • Falling unemployment
  • A crime rate that’s 20% lower than before the earthquakes.

If you support strong, stable leadership that makes the rebuild a priority and stays focused on jobs, growth and stronger public services for all Christchurch families, I am asking that you give your support to Matthew Doocey on 30 November.
Yours sincerely
John Key
Rt. Hon John Key

[Gerry Brownlee] I’ve known Matthew Doocey for a very long time, I think he’s going to be an excellent Member of Parliament for Christchurch East. He’s worth voting for because all the personality traits he has are the things that typify the east. A strong resilience, a willingness to get in there and get things done, ah and a great desire to see that part of the city even better than it was before the difficulties that we’ve had over the last couple of years. And I know that ah Matthew will be one of those people who forges ah an identity for the east built around his commitment to the east.

[John Key] Matthew is a fine New Zealander who returned ah looking to win the seat of Christchurch East ah for National. He has obviously my full support. Ah this is a city that’s undergone a huge natural disaster. Ah it’s a city that’s gone through a lot of pain and a lot of suffering ah but the Government has, as one of it’s four key priorities, standing behind the people of Christchurch. That has included a 15 billion dollar contribution towards the 4o billion dollar rebuild and many other programmes that we’ve won-  that we’ve run. The people of Christchurch East have gone through a lot um as a result of the earthquake, they deserve in the good representation in Parliament and we hope that you, when it comes ah polling day, will give your support to Matthew Doocey and the National Party.

[Jo Goodhew] Hi Matt, we’ve had a good day out door-knocking I took um Grant along with me and the two of us knocked on doors in an area of Christchurch East that’s been badly damaged by the earthquakes. This is what we’re telling them about you. That you are a local lad, born and raised here, that you’ve got your heart in this city, and that you want to represent the people of Christchurch East.
[Matthew Doocey] Great.
[J] I was able to tell them that I think you’d be a strong addition to our caucus, that your voice would be a strong one for the people of Christchurch East, so I’m hoping that they were listening and in fact many of them seemed to want to engage in that conversation.
[M] Thank you Jo.

[TITLE] Matthew Doocey – Introductions

[SPOKEN] I suppose a bit about me ah I’m a Christchurch boy, I was born in the old Calvary Hospital on Bealey Ave and ah I went to Loreto College first down Condell Ave off Blighs Road there and that closed down I think, it was nothing to do with me! But then I moved on to ah St Patricks ah in Bryndwr and then for high school I went to St Bedes College and that was ah sort of my first experience of politics, I was elected on as the first student representative on the Board of Trustees. That was actually initiated by David Lange I think in 1988 it was the Tomorrow’s School agenda. Ah and so ah had a good time at St Bedes, I- I really enjoyed it and growing up in the Bryndwr area as well and ah I very enjoyed um growing up in Christchurch and got some great memories of um days in Christchurch East and that was one of the connections for me really, like a lot of people who were brought up in Christchurch sort of you know the family days in Brighton and Waimari beaches, the school sports at the QEII Stadium ah I remember sort of running and ah puffing a bit down Marine Parade for the old ah city to surf. Um so ah I studied ah Counselling Psychology ah after high school and started working with young people in mental health services. They call them talking therapy services now ah it’s a new name for counselling. Ah and like a lot of young people in New Zealand I- I decided to do my OE. Um probably not like a lot of people in New Zealand I ended up staying about ten years in London but it was a good opportunity for me ah I worked for ten years in the NHS um and ah in that time I did a Masters in Health Care Management ah and I was able to travel a bit as well ah the European Union opened up at that time so I was able to go to some of the Eastern block countries ah and also far afield like the Middle East and Africa and a lot of Europe as well and it was at that time I suppose I became a bit more politically aware and London seems to be the hub for that. I did a Masters in Global Politics and sort of made me very aware of how in a global world we’re not only interdependent on economies in each country but we’re also competitive with them as well.  It’s very important that we ensure we have jobs and growth and an improving e- economy. But I- I must say I think my greatest success in London was meeting my beautiful wife ah Victoria um and we were, were married in Hungary I got my family and friends to come over and ah the earthquakes I think were a bit of a calling for me. I wanted to come back and ah bring my experience in working in the mental health and health fields, ah a- a- and you know put something back in. I had a great upbringing in Christchurch ah my- my wife and I are expecting at the start of next year our first child and very much wanted to bring up a family in Christchurch and also for Vic ah it’s a great opportunity ’cause of course being from a landlocked country ah to be able to drive 15 minutes was a great, great luxury and opportunity that I think sometimes we all overlook ah in Christchurch. That’s why I think Christchurch East is a special place to all of us geographically, you know the coast line i- is a very special place. Um so I’ll be ah knocking on the doors tomorrow and I’ll be telling people that they should be voting for me ’cause I’m a, I’m a local boy and I- I’m new to politics I bring a fresh pair of eyes, a fresh perspective ah I think ah people in, in the east should vote for me ’cause i- people wanting a change, they’re very tired of the old representation they’ve had since, I think 1922 for Labour, ah and so they’re wanting a, a new start, a new voice and I- I think I can bring that ’cause I can offer them a constructive voice inside a John Key National Government. I’ll be telling them to vote for me because ah I bring my skills and experience of working in the health sector where we do put people first. Ah and working with individuals and families, I very much built a career around that, of helping people to take control in their lives and I think there’s, there’s a bit of work around that ah in Christchurch East and Christchurch in general. I think I’ll also be telling them they should be voting for me because more than ever we need reliable, strong and stable leadership, ah you know National’s plans of jobs, growth in the economy are working and they’re paying for our health care, our education and the rebuild as well, um so I think you know they should be voting for me to give um you know we need to make a strong Christchurch East, ah we need a strong Christchurch East and I think Christchurch needs a strong Christchurch East so I, I do encourage you to follow me over the next eight weeks, ah the highs and probably the lows as well, ah 1922 it’s been held by Labour and I think there’s another statistic that no incumbent government has won a by-election in ah, in ah an opposition held seat. On saying that, I think we’ve got a lot to say, I think we can be very proud of the leadership and the security and stability the the Government provided ah after the earthquakes and very much now holding it as one of their four main priorities. I think I heard with the Labour reshuffle ah the portfolio’s way down in the twenties where it’s held, and of course with us it’s held and number three so a very clear message about the continued commitment to the rebuild in Christchurch. So thank you very much for allowing me to talk today and ah I look forward to having a cup of tea ah later on, thank you.
