2013 Christchurch East By-Election

Transcript:
Hi, it’s Leighton Baker here.
Now it’s your turn to choose.
Our democratic process is far from perfect but it is still a great system.
So get involved and have your say about who you would choose to coordinate recovery in the East.
Whether it’s Leighton standing for democracy, transparency, and cooperation, or any of the other great candidates, get out on Saturday and make your vote count.
Christchurch East is a unique part of the city where only minutes from home, people can be walking on a wind-swept beach, or biking over soft needles in a forest.
It’s a lifestyle only a few get to enjoy, and those who do enjoy it, have every right to protect it.
Although the earthquakes have been a terrible tragedy, they have also brought out tenacity, innovation, compassion, and cooperation to a level we have rarely seen before.
I would love to help connect all these areas so that the Christchurch East recovery is not based on government dictums or handouts, but by the community as a whole, meeting each other’s needs.
Thank you for your support.

Who is this man?
Well you have heard the name…Leighton Baker.
He has got one wife, four children, two grandchildren and a brand new knee. Leighton is a firm believer that the quality of your life is directly related to the quality of your relationships, and that is why family is so important. It is a driving motivation behind the Conservative Party’s family-friendly policies.
He has been a self-employed builder for twenty five years and has a team of top guys working for him. He has spent six and a half years tutoring teenagers who were struggling at school and saw a 95% success rate of those guys finding work. That’s why he is passionate about seeing the education sector embracing trades training to be as important as tertiary education, in allowing all students to find success in their strengths.
Leighton was enjoying a bit of motor sport when the rally car he was co-driving hit a tree at 120kph, which means two things:
1. He’s not that great a co-drivers and…
2. He needed a new knee.
Leighton really enjoys building but sees an urgent need for a change of culture in government from dictatorial and oppositional to democratic and inclusive, and hopes to be part of that change.
“With my children and Grandchildren living here, I have a vested interest in seeing New Zealand as a leading nation. A nation that others can aspire to, and learn from. This can only happen as we value people, work together, and have a strong foundation.”

Still not seen this Christchurch Rebuilder?
Hi I am Leighton Baker from the Conservative Party.
I have been getting around meeting people, hearing stories, and formulating a game plan for the East rejuvenation.
After twenty five years in the building industry, it is obvious to me that the East’s recovery is not down to a ‘one person’ or ‘one group’ activity. A collaborative approach by people passionate about the area is what’s required.
In building, the main contractor is really a coordinator ensuring that the project is on task, on budget, and everyone can monitor progress.
It is this transparent and inclusive approach that will progress the East’s recovery.
You may have noticed some of our billboard. So vote for me we will have a party!
Go Conservative!

Have you seen this Christchurch Rebuilder?
He is a 47 year old builder who has been self-employed for 23 years, and has worked with EQC, EQR, and insurance companies. He has seen a lot of the system failures and would relish the opportunity to make the system fairer, quicker, and more customer focussed, because he loves helping people achieve their goals.
His name is Leighton Baker and he is standing as a Conservative Candidate in the Christchurch East By-Election.
Why on earth should you vote for Leighton?
Great question, and we hope over the next few weeks to give you some compelling reasons why Leighton is the best person to take Christchurch East into rebuild, and why you should vote Conservative.
HE WAS HERE! After the September Earthquakes, Leighton and his team were in the East, doing emergency repairs, digging long drops, and securing people’s houses. His wife co-ordinated a laundry team with ladies from Canterbury, washing and drying clothes to be delivered back to those without power and water. His son and daughter were involved with the Rangiora Express, cooking and delivering meals to the East.
Come to the New Brighton Market on Saturday morning (2nd November) if you would like to meet Leighton, have a chat, bounce some ideas, or just make suggestions.

Vote TAT 2
Tat Loo Independent Candidate for DCC (Central Ward)
Kia ora,
In 2007 I defected from the North Island, where I was raised, to Dunedin. I haven’t looked back. I’m a technology entrepreneur, manufacturing specialist and registered chiropractor in private practice. I hold a Master’s Degree in Pain Medicine. I’ve worked for major NZ corporates like Carter Holt Harvey Packaging, Marine Air Systems and Deloitte Consulting.
I’m standing for the City Council because we urgently need to get Dunedin cracking. I will support investment to safeguard Dunedin jobs and social services. I will push for cuts to extravagant and over-optimistic DCC capital projects, and advance new thinking on energy, climate change and sea-level increases. My commitments to South Dunedin include supporting ongoing free parking, and ensuring that plans for a library in South Dunedin proceed for the benefit of the entire community.
My “Bulk Buying Dunedin” policy will make essential utilities cheaper for all residents as well as reducing business costs. As a local employer and business owner proud to pay above minimum wage, I understand the importance of attracting high quality investment, permanent jobs and good people to Dunedin.

NEVILLE PEAT
City Council candidate
Dunedin is one of the world’s great small cities, right? If not, why not? My contribution has been through books (some published by Otago University Press), environmental projects like Orokonui Ecosanctuary and Otago Peninsula possum-busting, and, with my former regional council hat on, projects like upgrading the city’s sewerage plant.I’m all for resilience measures in the face of climate change and sea-level rise, renewable energy, nature tourism, and keeping graduates in Dunedin through more red carpet for high-tech/knowledge-based industries and less red tape. Other platforms for me: council transparency, operating within our means . . . and that new WoF scheme for student flats.
Three terms on Otago Regional Council 1998-2007, last term Deputy Chair.
Chair, Orokonui Ecosanctuary Trust Board
